Now, before we get going with this you may be wondering why a videographer and photographer is talking about podcasting. Well, it all comes down to marketing. Podcasts are another weapon in your social media arsenal. I have seen a huge increase in work recently from helping clients to produce their podcasts. We help them to record their podcast, we shoot video of the podcast, we help them to create their branding and distribute it out to the world. The video side is an element that people don’t realise the power of. You are building another audience and growing your brand. Google loves video so by uploading your podcast to Youtube you are increasing your chances of ranking higher in the search engines. Transcribe your podcast and turn it into a blog post. All those keywords that will be spattered throughout are perfect for your SEO game. You can also grab smaller snippets and use them as small posts and teasers. There is so much content that you can get out of a single podcast session.
So back to the first 30 seconds of your podcast. It is so important to get your message across quickly. 30 seconds may seem like a while but believe me, it’s not. You need to state who you are, what the episode is about and if you have any guest speakers joining you. If you are a seasoned podcaster with thousands of listeners then you are an exception to the rule. But for a growing podcast, you need to be clear and concise. By taking your time to get into the details of your show you risk losing that listener to a rival podcast. Once they discover a podcast they like on their preferred topic it can be extremely difficult to win their attention back.
Your cover art is equally important. It needs to be clear and get your message across in an instant. Use bold complementary colours and think about showing your smiling face. A friendly face will draw people in more than a random logo. You need to think about all these new viewers that know nothing about you.
With all the competition out there you need to be strict with how you present yourself. It can be difficult to get the balance right between showing your personality and getting the information across. Save your idle chit chat for after your title intro has rolled. From then on you can be sure that your listener is there for the duration and could even become a full-time fan.
Practice makes perfect and you will soon be growing your audience from a number of different avenues. Just don’t give up. It takes time to build and grow a podcast. If you are thinking about starting your own podcast then the best time to start is today.
